Koraput: Duduma Waterfalls, said to be one of the highest in India, is a major attraction in Koraput district.
Known as ‘Matsya Tirtha’, Duduma attracts a large number of visitors every year. However, lack of proper infrastructure – accommodation, night stay, toilet and drinking water facilities – and safety measures near the spot have raised serious concerns and added to the woes of the tourists.
The 574 ft-high Duduma Waterfalls is formed by the Machkund River and is about 92 km from the district headquarters. It is on the border between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha and its water produces power at Machkund Hydro Electric Power Project located at Onukudelli. Machkund is also an important place for pilgrimage. The name Machkund comes from a pilgrimage point called ‘Matsya Kunda’ near the township of Paderu in Andhra Pradesh.
The deep green forests help soothe the soul of travellers while the towering mountains add beauty to the overall appeal of this area. Duduma has two sub waterfalls, one drops down in Andhra Pradesh and the other in Odisha.
Travellers who often come to Odisha know that the state is known for its tribal culture and would be surprised to know that the ‘Bondas,’ an important tribe, live close to this waterfall. But lack of safety often poses risks for tourists, especially children.
Expressing concern, people demanded immediate steps to ensure safety of the tourists and facilities for visitors who come from distant places.
“A watch tower will be constructed and stairs will be repaired. Guard rail and platforms will be constructed for safe sightseeing of tourists,” Lamptaput BDO Soumya Sarthak Mishra said.
