Puri, Dec 9: Work at several government offices here came to a grinding halt Tuesday as district judge court lawyers vacated the offices demanding arrest of a tehsil official who had allegedly assaulted advocate Biranchi Das a few days ago.
The agitating lawyers congregated at the district bar association office in the morning and went on a spree to shut down government offices.
The government offices including those of collector’s, sub-collector’s, district election authority, regional road transport, sub-registrar’s, Puri-Konark development authority’s, tehsil, district rural development agency, consolidation and land settlement were targeted by the lawyers.
“We will continue our agitation till the tehsil office staffer who had attacked advocate Biranchi Das is not arrested. We also demand the transfer of the officials working at the tehsil office for the last 20 years,” said lawyers Gopal Panda and Debashish Das.
According to sources, advocate Biranchi Das had an altercation with a revenue inspector (RI) at the tehsil office after the latter demanded illegal gratification of `5,000 to clear certain files. In the meantime, a tehsil office employee had shoved Biranchi to the ground at the behest of the RI. Biranchi got his hand fractured in the incident.
