Berlin: A hat-trick from striker Robert Lewandowski, supported by strikes from Frenchman Kingsley Coman and Spain’s Thiago Alcantara saw Bayern Munich rout Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 to clinch the German Super Cup for the seventh time.
It was also the first official Bayern match for coach Croatian Niko Kovac who arrived at the Bavarian club after bidding farewell to Frankfurt last season. Incidentally Kovac was at Frankfurt helm when they defeated Bayern in the German Super Cup final last season.
Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 21st minute scoring from a header after Joshua Kimmich fed the Pole with an accurate pass. Bayern doubled the lead five minutes later, Lewandowski again this time after heading a Arjen Robben corner.
Eintracht had their chance to close the gap before the end of the first half, after Matts Hummels’ foul on Mijat Gacinovic could have earned him the red card, but the referee left it at a yellow.
The second half too was no different as Bayern kept on dominating the proceedings with Lewandowski completing his hat-trick in the 54th minute when he latched onto a pass from Thomas Muller to put the ball inside the net deceiving rival goalie Frederik Roennow.
Coman added the fourth for Bayern in the 63rd minute after Roennow palmed David Alaba’s cross which fell in front him and the French forward made no mistake.
Thiago completed the rout five minutes from the final whistle after receiving the ball from Kimmich to complete a clear Bavarian victory.
