Bhubaneswar: Khurda District and Sessions judge Thursday sentenced Dipti Ranjan Patnaik, the main accused in the sensational Bachan Sudha Patnaik murder case to life imprisonment.
The verdict came little more than seven years after the crime had been committed. The court also asked Dipti to pay Rs 5,000 as fine failing which he will undergo another two months in prison.
The deceased was the wife of businessman Manu Charan Patnaik and the couple was staying at their residence at Sabar Sahi in Rasulgarh under Mancheswar police limits.
Dipti worked as a security guard at the residence of the couple. He knew that they always kept cash and expensive jewellery in the house. So he hatched a plan to rob them.
Dipti entered the house September 11, 2013 when Bachan Sudha was alone. He killed her by slitting with a kitchen knife and fled with a diamond locket, some ATM cards and other valuables.
Bharat Charan Sahoo the IO in the case nabbed the accused from his hideout in Palasuni area here September 14, 2013 while Public Prosecutor Sarad Chandra Samanta fought the case.
