Kendrapara: District session judge Basudev Panda Monday sentenced a man to undergo life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 for stabbing a woman with whom he had an affair.
According to public prosecutor Bhimsen Bhuiyan, convict Susil Rout alias Budha of Tangantaila developed an extra-marital affair with a married woman, a mother of two children when her husband was away in Nepal. When the woman’s in-laws came to know of their illicit relationship, they allegedly prevented the woman from meeting Susil.
Consequently, the woman refused to entertain Susil which angered him. Later, he invited the woman to a local pond October 11, 2014 and allegedly hit her with a sharp instrument before pushing her into the pond. Fellow villagers rescued her hearing her screams.
Seeing the villagers Susil fled the spot. He is reported to have attempted to kill himself as a suicide note in his possession revealed. However, he was overpowered by locals before being handed over to Rajnagar police.
The judge convicted Susil to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he would have to serve a jail term of another year, added the public prosecutor.
