Locals fume as heavy vehicles ply Barbil roads despite ban

Barbil: Despite the ban on entry of heavy vehicles in Barbil municipal council limits of Keonjhar district between 6:00am to 1:00pm and 3:00pm to 8:00pm, several such vehicles enter these roads leading to massive traffic congestion on the streets.

After failing to curb congestion on roads and with spiraling accidents, the local administration had barred entry of heavy vehicles to address traffic chaos and commuters’ safety issues in the industrial town. The vehicles, however, continue to ply in total disregard for the administrative order.

Many of these vehicles affix an ‘on government duty, not to be detained’ sticker to avoid prying eyes of cops.

Denizens, meanwhile, continue to face issues while traversing the 18 km stretch from Barbil to Bileipada owing to traffic jams. The traffic condition remains especially bad at four main junctions – Bhadrasahi, Gopabandhu, Dakabangla and level crossing.

The locals have started taking to the streets over the issue.

In a recent case, denizens detained a rock laden truck Friday that had a sticker that read, “PWD rock. Bhadrasahi to Barbil. Not to be detained.”

The truck was later released after the owner of the vehicle accepted his fault and removed the sticker.
