Jhumpura: In a controversial development, villagers have complained about lifting of soil for filling up a canal of the Kanpur Major Irrigation Project to Keonjhar Sadar tehsildar and reported the matter in the Palaspanga police beat house, Monday.
The canal construction work for the irrigation project is going on at Kanpur village in Kandarapasi panchayat under Keonjhar Sadar block. Along with the digging work of canal the need for huge quantities of soil is arising to fill up various culverts and canal bridges at different places.
Although the contractor who has got tender for this work is lifting huge quantities of soil from government lands, the very large pits that are being created by lifting soil through machines is causing problems for the nearby local farmers. In many cases, the embankments of their agricultural fields are sliding down and the bona fide land owners are getting affected by this.
The views of Keonjhar Sadar tehsildar, Prakash Chandra Behera, over this issue could not be obtained.
Reacting to the allegations, the police beat house in-charge Srikant Parida said, “We will find out a solution by discussing with both the contractor concerned and local farmers.”
The assistant engineer of the project said, “We will look into the matter and sort it out very soon.”
