Cuttack: Police Wednesday night seized a lorry carrying more than 70 cows at Nirgundi toll gate on NH-16 near Tangi in this district. The driver was arrested.
Acting on a tip-off, Tangi police intercepted the lorry near the toll gate Wednesday late night. During the raid, over 70 cows which were being transported under inhumane conditions were seized.
At least eight cows were found dead.
Police seized the vehicle along with a Mahindra Scorpio (Registration No. OR 02 AT 9063) which was piloting it. However, the driver of the vehicle managed to flee from the spot.
“The truck was carrying an illegal cattle consignment from Khordha district to Kolkata of neighbouring West Bengal State. The seized cows would be sent to the Choudwar Goshala,” said Bimal Kumar Barik, IIC, Tangi Police Station.
Notably, Tangi Police had seized a cattle-laden container truck from the NH-16 in the area in a similar fashion around 15 days ago and arrested eight persons.
