Low pressure over Bay of Bengal likely, IMD predicts rains in Odisha for five days

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area is likely to be formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during the next 48 hours, IMD sources said Monday and predicted rains in several districts of Odisha over the next five days.

It said a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal and extends up to 5.8 kilometer above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during the next 48 hours.

Current meteorological features indicated widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over some districts of Odisha during next four days, the source added.

Also, thunderstorms with lightning activity are very likely during the next 2 days and IMD has advised people to take safe shelter during thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning.

Under the impact of the low pressure light to moderate rain/ thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of Odisha and also most places over the districts of interior Odisha and at many places over the districts of coastal Odisha.

Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada districts.

The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for these districts. Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over as many as 22 districts of the state.

The IMD has also issued an Orange Warning for the districts of Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh where heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at a one or two places.

There is the possibility of water logging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture fields in the districts under orange warnings. There is also the possibility of some damage to informal/ kutcha roads, wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses and the possibility of landslides/ mudslides in vulnerable hilly areas.
