Malkangiri woman dies in custody

Mathili: In a shocking incident, a woman arrested on charge of smuggling ganja, died allegedly by suicide in the excise police station custody here in Malkangiri district, Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Priti of MV-66 village under Kalimela block of the district.

Reports said excise sleuths conducted raids on Gobindpali Ghat road after being tipped off about ganja smuggling in nearby Kamalapadar area under Mathili police limits.

They apprehended Priti Friday and found her carrying 10 kg ganja in a bag during verification. She was brought to excise police station but could not be produced in court.

She was kept in the lock-up but was found hanging with her scarf Saturday morning. Excise sleuths rushed her to Mathili hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

On being informed, Mathili police reached the spot and sent the body to Malkangiri headquarters hospital for post-mortem, Excise police IIC Rabindranath Pradhan said.

While the exact reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained, police have formed a special team to probe the unnatural death. Probe is on.
