Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed action taken report (ATR) within four weeks from the Bolangir superintendent of police (SP) in connection with the sensational murder of Kalahandi teacher Mamita Meher in October 2021 that created a flutter in state’s political circles.
The NHRC move came while hearing a plea filed by lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy. Taking note, the rights body had September 22 last year sought an ATR from the Kalahandi SP within four weeks in connection with the issue.
In response, the Kalahandi SP October 21 last year informed the commission that Kalahandi additional SP probed the matter and found that Mamita was murdered within the jurisdiction of Sindhekela police station of Bolangir district. And Sindhekela police has registered a case (97/2021) under Sections 366, 302, 201 and 120B of the IPC and chargesheet has been filed in the court for trial.
The Kalahandi SP further said, “Investigation of the case was taken up by Bolangir police and except rendering necessary assistance to Bolangir police as and when sought for, Kalahandi police had no role in investigation of the case.”
Subsequently, the rights body asked the Bolangir SP to submit an ATR and details of the compensation paid to the next of kin of the deceased in connection with the incident within four weeks.
Notably, October 8, 2021, the partially burnt body of Mamita was found by the Odisha Police in a dug-up pit near a sports stadium in Kalahandi. Mamita, who lived in Turikela tehsil in the Bolangir district and taught in a school in the Mahalinga area of the district where Gobinda Sahu was the founder, had gone previously missing.
Soon after, Gobinda was arrested on charges of kidnapping and murdering Mamita. Sahu was found dead inside the Kantabanji sub-jail in December last year.
