Man arrested for killing wife over dowry

Khunta: Police arrested a man Wednesday for allegedly killing his wife over dowry issues in Mayurbhanj district.

The deceased has been identified as Mandakini, the wife of Dhanurjay Mahanta of Laxmansahi village under Khunta police limits. She is the daughter of Bidyadhar Mahanta of Renukasahi village under Betnoti police limit.

According to police, Mandakini married Dhanurjay in 2005. They have a son (13) and a daughter (7). Though a large part of the dowry had already been paid to Dhanurjay during marriage, he had been persistent on his demand for more. He had allegedly been torturing Mandakini physically and mentally after she refused to ask her parents for the extra amount.

Even though the matter had been settled after parents of Mandakini called on Dhanurjay and held a discussion over the issue, Tuesday they were informed of Mandakini’s death. Dhanurjay informed them that Mandakini self-immolated herself after everyone else in the family fell asleep at night.

Mandakini’s brother Debasish, however, filed a complaint against his brother-in law for allegedly killing his sister for dowry.

Police started investigation into this matter and have sent the body for further investigation.

The main reason behind the murder will come to light after a thorough investigation with the help of scientific team, investigative officer Soumya Ranjan Bhol said.
