Jharsuguda: In a shocking incident, a man bludgeoned his 60-year-old mother to death with a cricket bat, leaving his father critical over family feud, Saturday.
The heinous incident was reported from Rangiatikra village under Laikera police limits in Jharsuguda district.
On receipt of information, police reached the village and arrested the accused. He has been identified as Lukeswara Kusum, son of the deceased woman Ashamati Kusum.
A case was registered and a further probe into the incident was on. The accused Lukeswara Kusum is now being interrogated by the Laikera Police in connection with the shocking incident.
According to sources, Lukeswara and his wife were not in good terms and living separately for the past few days. Holding his mother Ashamati responsible for the dispute, Lukeswara thrashed her with a bat. When Lukeswara’s father tried to stop him, he attacked him too and fled the spot.
Later, locals rushed to the spot after hearing the screams of the couple and admitted them to the district headquarters hospital. After preliminary treatment, she was shifted to Burla-based VSS institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR).
However, Ashamati succumbed to her injuries while her husband, who has also sustained injuries in the attack, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
“Based on the complaint of Ashamati’s son-in-law Chintamani Mahananda, we have arrested Lukeswara. The accused works as a labourer and was not in good terms with wife. When his parents tried to resolve the issue and talk to Lukeswara, he hit his mother with a cricket bat and a brick on her head,” informed IIC of Laikera police station, Biswapati Panda.
He will be forwarded to court, police said.
