The deceased was identified as Khira Padhiala, father of the accused, Satyaban Padhiala.

According to reports, Satyaban had married a woman. However, the woman left him over some issue.

He then eloped with another woman and brought her home without the permission of his parents. This created tension in the family as his father Khira always opposed the move and the two were involved in verbal duels over the issue.

Satyaban had gone to a market over some work Friday night. He returned home and found his wife missing. He suspected his parents of throwing her out of the house and broke out into an altercation with his father.

Neighbours rescued the elderly man and rushed him to Udala community health centre (CHC). Later, he was shifted to Baripada district headquarters hospital (DHH) where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Following Khira’s death, people tied Satyaban to a tree and thrashed him black and blue before handing him over to the police. A case of murder was registered in this connection and a probe was launched. Later, Satyaban was produced in court, IIC Sanatan Sahu said.
