Man critical in tusker attack

Dhenkanal: After trampling a woman to death and attacking a farmer, a tusker has now attacked another person at Kandarsinha panchayat under Dihadol forest section of Mahabirod range in Dhenkanal forest division.

He has been identified as Jogi Naik (60) of Baragharia Sahi.

The incident occurred while Naik had gone to attend nature’s call in a forest near his house. Meanwhile, he came face to face with the tusker that chased and attack him.

The pachyderm lifted him in its trunk and battered him to the ground. After much effort, Naik managed to save himself from the tusker and ran away. Later, he fell unconscious in the forest.

Family members searched for him after he did not return home and found him lying unconscious in the forest. He was then rushed to Parajang community health centre (CHC). After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital (DHH).

After getting information, Mahabirod ranger Harmohan Nayak visited Naik in the hospital and provided Rs 5,000 for his treatment.

The pachyderm also strayed into the house of a local, Dasrathi Nayak and ransacked his house while the family was asleep.

It may be noted here that the tusker has by now killed a woman and injured three persons including a farmer.

A day back, a farmer, Biswajit Mangal, son of Bijan Bal Mangal of Damol under Dihadol forest section of Mahabirod forest range was attacked by the same tusker.

Similarly, an elderly woman was trampled to death at Khalibahal in Kandarasinha panchayat under Mahabirod forest range by the tusker.

The incident led to outrage in the locality as locals feared for their children who go to school on the same road. They demanded that the forest officials drive the tusker away into the wild before it claims more lives.
