Man dead, 4 hurt in honeybee attack

Lanjigarh: In a tragic incident, a man who was critically injured after being attacked by a swarm of honeybees at Betiapada village under Benagaon panchayat and Bijepur police limits in Kalahandi district lost his life while undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) at Bhawanipatna late Saturday night. Four others, who were seriously injured and were admitted to the Benagaon hospital have now recovered and returned home. The deceased was identified as Burja Majhi, 45, and the injured persons are Purna Majhi, 46, Lipa Majhi, 36, Mugri Majhi, 38 and Pagu Majhi, 38. All are residents of Betiapada village.

According to reports, the five individuals had gone to the forest near Titigaon waterfall Friday evening to collect firewood when they were suddenly attacked by a swarm of honeybees. Their family members rushed them to the Benagaon hospital. After showing signs of improvement Purna, Lipa, Mugri and Pagu returned to Betiapada village the same night.

However, Burja’s condition deteriorated and he was shifted to the Bhawanipatna DHH by an ambulance. There he died Saturday night while undergoing treatment. Officials of the Bijeipur police station visited the DHH and sent the body for post-mortem. The body of the deceased was handed over to his family members Sunday.
