Sorada: A biker was killed while his pillion-riding wife suffered critical injuries after a speeding 102 ambulance hit their two-wheeler at Khariguda Square on SoradaBadgad road in Ganjam district, Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Jai Mahakur, 60, and his wife Subhasini, 53. The latter is an ASHA worker in Gundibira village under Borsingi panchayat.
Fire services personnel rescued the couple in critical condition and rushed them to Sorada hospital where doctors pronounced Jai dead on arrival. The injured woman was later, shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
The mishap occurred when the ambulance was returning to Sorada after dropping a patient at Badgad hospital. The couple was on their way to the same hospital to attend to a job in the Health department when the accident occurred. The driver of the ambulance, Shiba Shankar Nayak later surrendered at the Sorada police station.
Police visited the spot and launched an investigation. After reports surfaced, MLA Purna Chandra Swain, NAC chairman Shiba Shankar Panda and several people visited the hospital and enquired about the condition of the ASHA worker
