Man detained for allegedly killing wife over dowry

Pattapur: Police Wednesday detained a man on charges of killing his wife Tuesday night over dowry demands in Ganjam district. The accused has been identified as Krushna Pradhan of S Gopalpur village that comes under Pattapur police limits of Sanakhemundi block.

The deceased has been identified as Basanti Pradhan — the daughter of Bishnu Pradhan of Semakhai village under Aska police limits.

The incident came to the fore after the woman was found dead in her in-law’s house. Basanti’s father had filed a written police complaint alleging that her husband and in-laws killed his daughter after they failed to meet their dowry demands. Based on his complaint, police registered a case and launched a probe into the incident.

The cops recovered the body in the presence of Pattapur police, Sanakhemundi Tehsildar and on-duty magistrate Amit kumar Nayak and later sent it for postmortem.

According to police, Basanti and Krushna were married for about a year and half. Though a large part of the dowry had already been paid to Krushna’s family during the wedding, they had been persistent on their demand for more.

Krushna had allegedly been torturing Basanti physically and mentally after she refused to ask her parents for the extra amount, alleged her father Bishnu.

On the other hand, Basanti’s husband Krushna informed police officials that his wife committed suicide.
