Man dies after consuming ‘spurious’ alcohol

Koraput: Tension ran high at Kirambha village under Dasmantpur police limits in this district after a man reportedly died due to consumption of spurious alcohol Saturday, reports said.

The deceased has been identified as Anam Muduli, (50), of Giriligumma panchayat. But Koraput district Excise Inspector Manmohan Dhangdamajhi rejected the charge.

Anam’s wife Ruku Muduli said he had gone for work to nearby Gadla village Thursday. His family grew apprehensive after he did not return home till late in the night.

But as he was a drunkard his family thought he might have slept in some relative’s house after drinking and did not search for him. Bu they became worried after he did not return home the next day too.

Later, they went in search of him and alerted relatives. Anam’s relative spotted his body lying in the local burial ground and alerted the police.

A police team led by Dasmantpur IIC reached the village. The body was sent for autopsy. Acting on a complaint by the deceased’s nephew Kailash Muduli, police registered a case of unnatural death and launched a probe.

While locals suspected Anam might have died due to excessive drinking nothing has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, there are rumours that someone might have poisoned him as it was the first such death in the area.

The police raided the liquor den from where Anam had consumed liquor. The liquor was manufactured and sold in the village by some villagers.

“The police are investigating the matter from all angles. It is suspected that he died due to excessive liquor consumption. We are trying to identify if there was any chemical in the liquor. As no one had earlier died like this the reason can be known only after the post-mortem,” a senior police official said.
