Cuttack: A local court here has awarded a two-year jail term to a man after holding him guilty of assaulting a girl and her mother ‘with intent to outrage their modesty’ in the Silver City in 2014. JMFC-City (Cuttack) Subhankar Mohapatra sentenced Ganesh Sahoo of Nuapatna area here to undergo a two-year jail term and slapped a penalty of Rs 1,000 on him for committing offence under Section 354 of IPC. Failure to pay the penalty would entail an additional 15-day jail term, the court said in its Monday’s order.
The JMFC-City (Cuttack) also held Sahoo guilty of offences committed under Sections 323 and 341 of the IPC and awarded him a six-month and 15-day jail term for the offences respectively. The sentences will run concurrently, the order said. Assistant Public Prosecutors (APPs) Sanjeev Kumar Sahu, Satyaranjan Pani and RS Behera, who conducted the case for the prosecution, examined as many as seven witnesses. According to the case details, the girl was on her way to attend tuition classes in Nuapatna area under Mangalabag police limits here at around 7am December 13, 2014 when Sahoo assaulted her ‘with intent to outrage her modesty’. When the girl’s mother tried to rescue her, she also faced Sahoo’s wrath.
