Bantala: A local court Monday convicted a man on charges of killing his wife suspecting her infidelity and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
After recording the statements of 10 witnesses in the case, district and sessions judge Asant Kumar Das awarded life imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him. He would undergo an additional jail of one-year, if he defaults the fine, the court ruled.
According to the case diary, the incident occurred January 1, 2017 at Jereng Dehuri Sahi under Jarpada police limits in Angul district.
Convict Nityanand Mukhi, 54, suspected his wife Kalpana Mukhi, 45, of cheating on him and this created a rift between the couple. Things took an ugly turn after the couple broke out in an altercation over the issue January 1.
Losing his cool, Mukhi took an axe and hacked his wife to death. Based on a complaint by her son Muna Mukhi’s complaint, police registered a case of murder and arrested Mukhi who confessed to the crime.
