Champua: A local court Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment after convicting him of the murder of a woman in 2016.
Additional district and sessions judge Pabitra Mohan Samal convicted Raya Munda and imposed a penalty of Rs 7,000 on him for the murder of Sanibari Munda of Malda under Bamebari police limits in Keonjhar district.
The judge examined the statements of 16 witnesses and the post-mortem report and passed the order under Section-302 of IPC and Section-4(1) of the Orissa Witch Hunting Prevention Act.
According to the case diary, Raya suspected that Sanibari killed his children by means of witchcraft. He hacked her to death January 17, 2016 with a sharp-edged weapon.
Police arrested Raya over a complaint lodged by the victim’s grandson. Public prosecutor Madhusudan Pati pleaded the matter on behalf of the state government and advocate Bishnu Charan Rathor on behalf of the defendant.
