Man girlfriend held for killing wife over extramarital affairs

Berhampur: Police cracked the murder mystery of Papina Behera of Raghunathpeta Sahi here in Ganjam district and arrested her husband and the latter’s girlfriend in this connection.

The accused duo has been identified as Rabindra Behera, wife of the deceased Papina and his girlfriend Bhanu Dakua. Preliminary probe revealed, the murder was fallout of extramarital affair of Rabindra.

Rabindra and Bhanu were produced in court and later remanded in judicial custody after the court rejected their bail pleas.

According to police, Rabindra was married to Papina and are parents to three children. However, he had an illicit affair with a woman of the same locality, estranged from her husband.

This created disturbance in the family. Fed up with his father’s illicit relationship and family feuds, Rabindra’s younger son Roshan took him to work in a company in Hyderabad.

Things took an ugly turn after Rabindra and his wife broke out into an altercation regarding the same issue over phone. In a fit of rage, Rabindra hatched a plan to kill his wife.

He told his son that he was going to Bangalore and instead took a train to Berhampur. He bought two knives and a bottle of petrol at Brahmapur railway station and went to his house.

Before Papina could understand anything, he attacked her and stabbed her with a knife. He also attacked Papina’s father who was also in the house. He then slit Papina’s throat before fleeing from the house as neighbours rushed to the spot hearing the noise.

In a bid to escape arrest, he went to seek shelter at his girlfriend Bhanu’s house. Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted raid at Bhanu’s house and arrested the two.

“Bhanu loved Rabindra before her marriage. However, the two married off to their respective partners but continued their illicit affair. Fed up with her affair, Bhanu’s husband had left her 10 years back. She has since been living with her son and working as a daily wager. Recently, her son had also committed suicide, so she was living alone,” additional SP Shantunu Das said before media.
