Man hacks daughter-in-law, commits suicide

Jajpur: In a shocking incident, a 65-year-old man allegedly hacked his daughter-in-law with a sharp-edged weapon, leaving her critically injured and later committed suicide at Badabaruneipada village under Panikoili police limits in Jajpur district Saturday.

The injured woman, who sustained multiple injuries in the attack, was admitted to the local hospital. After preliminary treatment, she has been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack in a critical condition.

The deceased has been identified as Damodar Behera while his daughter-in-law was identified as Sakuntala (27). The incident occurred in the absence of Damodar’s son and Sakuntala’s husband, reports said.

On receipt of information, police reached the village and launched a probe. The body was seized and sent for autopsy.

Though the exact reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that the incident could be the fallout of some family feud. However, further investigation in connection with the incident is on, police said.

As per reports, the incident took place at around 2 pm Saturday. At first, the man attacked his younger daughter-in-law with a sharp weapon injuring her critical. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and found her in an injured and bleeding state. They then rushed her to the hospital.

Later, Damodar was found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of the village. Villagers suspect, he might have committed suicide by hanging himself under guilt after the attack or in the fear that the woman might die and he would be arrested.

“A case has been registered by Panikoili police. The injured woman was shifted to SCBMCH after preliminary treatment at Jajpur Hospital,” informed SDPO of Jajpur Road, Kedarnath Sahoo.

“The exact reason behind the attack could be ascertained only after the statement of the woman is recorded,” Sahoo added.
