Man held for killing grandparents, aunt in Kendrapara

Kendrapara: Police swung into action and arrested Bikram Das who killed his grandfather, grandmother and aunt in a drunken state after a family feud at Madhusudanpur under Marsaghai police limits in Kendrapara district Sunday morning.

His mother who also sustained serious injuries in the attack is currently under treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. His father Akshay Das suffered minor injuries.

The arrested accused has been identified as Bikram Das (28), a tractor driver by profession.

“After committing the heinous crime, the accused fled the village. He was nabbed from the nearby Aakhua village Sunday afternoon. The blood-stained wooden plank has been seized from the spot,” said (SDPO) Kendrapara Rajiv Lochan Panda.

A case has been registered under Section 302 (murder), he said.

According to reports, Bikram returned home in an inebriated state late Saturday night. He broke out in an altercation with his wife after the latter confronted him about his drinking habit. In a fit of rage, he thrashed her following heated arguments over excess drinking. Fearing for her life, the woman along with her two children fled the house towards her neighbourhood.

Still enraged, he attacked his father Akshay Das and mother Katika Das when they tried to intervene. Things took an ugly turn after his grandparents and an aunt who were in the house tried to resolve the matter.

Without a second thought, Bikram picked up a sharp knife and attacked the three. While Dhruba and Saraswati died on the spot, Pratima sustained grievous injuries in the attack and succumbed to her injuries while she was being taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

Social activist Amarbara Biswal attributed the incident to unchecked flow of illicit liquors in the locality. This had also led to a rise in criminal activities, he added.
