Man held for killing infant daughter

Betnoti:

Police Monday arrested a man on charge of killing his one-and-a-half-month-old girl at Merda village near Beisingha in Mayurbhanj district. He was identified as Ranjit Kumar Sahu.

While the infant died Friday, the police arrested the accused Monday following a complaint from Sahu’s mother-in-law.

The body of the baby was exhumed in the presence of Betnoti assistant tehsildar Sasmita Murmu and sent for autopsy.

According to reports, Ranjit, son of Bhupati Sahu, married Subasini Mahapatra, daughter of Somnath Mahapatra of Kuliana village near Badasahi in 2015. All his dowry demands had been met by Mahapatra and his family.

However, Sahu along with his family members allegedly demanded more dowry and inflicted mental and physical torture on Subasini. The couple had a baby girl two years ago and Subasini delivered another girl one-and-a-half months back.

The baby’s health was not well and Subasini requested Sahu to admit her to a hospital. However, Ranjit, who wanted a boy, was not happy with the girl and did not give her proper treatment at a hospital.

Besides, he allegedly tried to sell the baby. When Subasini objected to his plans, he allegedly beat her up. Left with no option, Subasini went to her parent’s home with the baby. However, Ranjit and his family members took away the baby from her. Later, the baby died due to lack of treatment, the complainant stated.
