Man held for ‘tormenting’ wife for dowry

Buguda: Police Monday arrested a man on charge of torturing his wife demanding more dowry in Betarsingi village in Ganjam district.

The accused, identified as Susant Jena of the village, was arrested after his estranged wife Namita filed a complaint of dowry torture at the police station.

Police said Susant married Namita of Kalasuta under Gangpur police limits two years back. Life went on peacefully for a year after the marriage. Namita was pushed into distress subsequently after her husband pestered for more dowry and started torturing her physically and mentally. She informed her father about the demands of her husband but the former expressed his inability to meet his demands.

However, Susant refused to listen to her and continued harassing her. Left with no option, she came back to her parent’s house and stayed there for a year and tried to resolve the issue amicably but in vain.

Ultimately, she approached the police and lodged a complaint.
