Angul: Nalco Police have detained a man and his father for allegedly killing a woman for dowry. The complaint was lodged at the police station by the deceased’s father.
Banambar Barik, a resident of Kankrei under Nisha police limits alleged that he had got his daughter Soumyasweta married to Satyananda of Balaramprasad village, April 26, 2016. The two also gave birth to a baby girl. However, it emerged that Satyananda was an alcoholic and tortured his wife on a regular basis for dowry.
Even though Satyanand was given a four-wheeler at the time of marriage, he had been demanding a two-wheeler worth Rs 2,00,000. As his demand was not met Satyananda and his father Monday allegedly murdered Soumyasweta.
Banamabar has mentioned the names of Satyananda’s father, mother, sister and brother-in-law in his complaint, alleging they were too involved in the killing of Soumyasweta.
On the other hand, Satyananda’s father Gokulananda refuted the allegations. He termed the allegation regarding torture for dowry as baseless.
“All the family members were fast asleep and we were also shocked to find her dead. We don’t know when Soumyasweta died,” said Gokulananda.
Nalco Police Station inspector-in-charge Geetanjali Sahu said a mark on the deceased’s neck at the time of ‘panchnama’ was identifiable. “There were no other injury marks on her body. However, the post-mortem report may provide us a lead to solve the case,” said Geetanjali.
The body has been handed over to the family members after post-mortem. On the basis of the complaint, police lodged a case (Case No-132/19) and are investigating into the allegation.
