Man jumps off Kathajodi bridge

Phulnakhara: ‘Frequent quarrels’ between a couple of Niali took a tragic turn with the 31-year-old man jumping off Kathajodi bridge near Press square here, Wednesday.

The incident took place at noon when Debabrata Mohapatra, along with his wife and son, was on way to home in Niali’s Karanji on a motorcycle (OR-05-Z-4374).

According to Debabrata’s wife Subhalaxmi Parida, the duo picked up a quarrel and a perturbed Debabrata parked his motorbike on Kathajodi bridge, a few metres away from Press Square, before jumping off the bridge. “We (Subhalaxmi and her son) were only the mute spectators as we couldn’t do anything to restrict him from taking the extreme step,” a hapless Subhalaxmi says as tears rolls down her cheeks.

Parida raised an alarm and requested the passersby for help. A few onlookers informed the Madhupatna police which in turn alerted the Cuttack Sadar police. “The fire fighters reached the spot around an hour later and carried out a frantic search though unsuccessfully,” Subhalaxmi says.

Sources said police rescued Parida and her son besides recovering Debabrata’s motorcycle. However, Debabrata is yet to be traced till the last report came in.

Notably, Parida is a teacher at Banakati Girls’ High School under Bangriposhi police limits in Mayurbhanj. Parida, along with her husband and son, was returning from her sister’s place in Jajpur after the Durga puja vacations. The duo had frequent quarrels, said a family source.
