Man kills 2-year-old son, elderly woman

Papadahandi/Maidalpur: A double murder rocked Nabarangpur district Friday after a man allegedly killed his two-year-old son and an elderly woman living in the neighbourhood at Gujumapadar village under Maidalpur police limits and Papadahandi block. However, the accused also died while undergoing treatment at a hospital after irate villagers thrashed him. The deceased duo has been identified as the accused’s minor son Baby Santa (2) and neighbour Janei Santa (60). Police sources said, the accused Radha Santa hacked his son repeatedly to death and when the elderly woman tried to intervene and save the child, he attacked and killed her there.

“The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained,” they said. The angered villagers after capturing accused Radha, beat him up black and blue. On being informed by the villagers, Papadahandi Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Aditya Sen, Inspector In-Charge Deepak Jena and other police officials reached the spot and arrested the accused. A scientific team was pressed into the case and an investigation started. Locals said Radha was roaming around the village after a quarrel with his wife Friday morning. He suddenly chased and attacked her with a sharpedged weapon when his wife was forced to run in order to save her own life leaving their minor son back. Finding the child alone, in a fit of rage, Radha attacked him and hacked him to death.

Hearing the noise, the elderly woman neighbour came to the boy’s rescue but the accused then attacked her. Both the child Baby and the woman Janei died on the spot. Radha lost his senses after the villagers thrashed him profusely after overpowering him. He was admitted to the Papadahandi hospital by the villagers and later shifted to Nabarangpur DHH after his condition worsened. However, accused Radha succumbed to his injuries at the hospital Friday evening. A case (154/23) was registered after a complaint was filed by Janei’s son Seemanchal. Police have sent all the bodies for post-mortem
