Odisha man kills kingfisher for grabbing prawn

Kendrapara: A man killed a kingfisher bird and made a video of the incident after which Forest Department officials nabbed him in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, a source said Thursday.

The arrested man was identified as Guru Dalai who hails from Pata Paria village under Rajkanika block in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

According to the source, Guru works at a prawn gheri in his village. While he was working, a kingfisher gobbled up a prawn. Guru, subsequently, caught the bird and killed it. He also recorded the video of the incident on Instagram, the source added.

Later, the video went viral following which Kendrapara Forest Department swung into action. Rajkanika Forest Ranger Manas Dash arrested Guru in connection with the incident.

“The youth was found harassing the kingfisher in the Instagram video. After watching the video, our officials arrested him. It’s a crime to harass any bird or animal and post the video on social media as per the Wildlife Protection Act,” said Rajkanika forest Ranger Manas Dash.
