Man rescued from atop Parija Library at Utkal University

Bhubaneswar: High drama unfolded at Utkal University here when a man climbed atop Parija Library in a bid to end his life.

After a three-hour-long operation, Fire services personnel managed to rescue the mentally unsound young man, identified as Subodh Chandra Barik alias Tapan, a resident of Market Chowk, Pattamundai in Kendrapara. Barik was later found to be suffering from mental illness.

Barik, who worked in the Postal department, reportedly left his house more than a month ago. He was staying with his relatives at VSS Nagar before moving to the residence of another relative at Behera Sahi in Nayapalli police limits October 23.

A missing case (79/19) had been registered with Nayapalli police in this regard. Barik suddenly reappeared after almost a month in a dramatic turn of events atop the Parija Library on varsity premises here Thursday.

He reportedly used the ladder used by the painters to reach the pinnacle of the library building. The fire brigade used the sky lift to approach the building and managed to rescue the man unharmed after a struggling three hours. A drone camera was also deployed to keep tab on the movement of the man.
Leading fireman Kashyap Patnaik of Odisha Fire Disaster and Response Academy, who played a major role in the rescue of Barik, has been receiving kudos for his hard work.
