Man shot dead by brother-in-law during poaching

Parlakhemundi: A man was allegedly shot dead by his brother-in-law while they were on a hunt for wild animals at Bhaliagani village, under Mohana police limits in Gajapati district, late Saturday night. The deceased has been identified as Kailash Nayak and the accused Udaya Nayak.

According to reports, Kailash, along with his brother-in-law Uday, and some other youths of the village had gone to a forest in the vicinity of the village to hunt wild animals on the occasion of the Raja festival. However, Kailash received gunshot injuries after a bullet was allegedly fired by his brotherin-law Uday during hunting. He died on the spot.

On being informed, a team from Mohana police reached the spot and recovered the body which was later sent to a hospital for post-mortem. Police seized a country-made firearm from Uday’s possession and detained him at the police station for questioning. Police also went to the village of the deceased for investigation.

Meanwhile, Kailash’s wife alleged that her husband and Uday were not in good terms for a long time. She claimed Uday intentionally fired at Kailash, resulting in his death. Following preliminary investigation, police learnt that Uday and Kailash had gone to the forest for poaching. Uday fired at an animal and the bullet accidentally hit Kailash leading to his death on the spot. SDPO, Ashwini Nayak said a murder case (No-119/24) has been registered at Mohana police station in connection with the incident and further investigations are on.
