Rourkela: A man and his son were crushed to death under a speeding truck near Balughat in Rourkela late Friday night. The deceased were identified as Shambhunath Sethy (36) and his father Muna Sethy (58).
The man was a truck driver while his son acted as an assistant of Sardar slum in the Steel city, sources said.
According to reports, the accident took place while the father son duo was crossing the road to have dinner in a ‘dhaba’ after parking their truck by NH-143.
Meanwhile, a speeding truck ran over them. Both of them died on the spot. Later, the speeding truck fled the spot.
The incident infuriated local residents who staged a road blockade Saturday morning by placing the body on the NH. The agitation continued till 1 pm as residents demanded compensation for the bereaved family and immediate arrest of the truck driver.
Angry residents burnt tyres and staged the demonstration.
A police team chased the truck driver and arrested him. The strike brought heavy vehicles on the NH to a grinding halt. The agitators relented after police officials provided necessary compensation from Red Cross and assured further aid after post-mortem.
Later, the bodies were seized and sent for autopsy. Two separate cases were registered and the truck driver was detained for interrogation.
