Man stabs brother-in-law to death in Ganjam

Digapahandi: A man stabbed his brother-in-law to death Saturday at Gouda Sahi of Bada Dumbula village under Digapahandi block in Ganjam district. The deceased has been identified as Kuna Maharana and the accused as Jagannath Maharana alias ‘Jaga’.

According to a source, Kuna and Jaga had gone to attend the shraddh ceremony of their father-in-law in Bada Dumbula village. While the rituals were in progress, an argument broke out between Kuna and Jaga over a loan. The scene turned ugly when Jaga lost his cool and attacked Kuna with a knife. Others present on the spot managed to rescue an injured Kuna and immediately rushed him to Digapahandi CHC. While undergoing treatment there, he breathed his last.

On being informed, a team from Digapahandi police station reached the spot, sent the body to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. They arrested Jaga and also seized the blood-stained weapon, a bike and his mobile phone.

Basant Kumar Sethy, Kuna the investigating officer in the case said Kuna was a native of Bhuduki village. He worked as a mason and was staying with his wife at Chanchadapali village under Digapahandi police limits. His brother-in-law Jaga, also a native of Bhuduki village, was staying at Dudurapada village under Patapur police limits.

Jaga had given Rs 1.80 lakh to Kuna at the time of the latter’s marriage. Kuna had promised to repay the loan amount soon.

While the funeral rituals were underway, Jaga asked Kuna to repay the loan amount immediately. Then an argument broke out between the two. Jaga lost his cool when Kuna refused to pay up. He stabbed Kuna with a knife multiple times. Kuna suffered multiple injuries from which he did not recover.

In this regard, a case (Case No-120/21) was registered and a detailed probe is underway.
