Bhapur: In yet another incident of man-elephant conflict, a 55-year-old man was trampled to death in Dhenkanal district Saturday.
The incident occurred at a cashew orchard near Ostamal village which comes under Bhapur outpost of Sadar police limits in this district.
The deceased has been identified as Benudhar Nayak.
According to villagers, Benudhar had gone to the cashew orchard early in the morning. He came face-to-face with the elephant unexpectedly while he was busy harvesting cashew nuts.
The pachyderm caught him up with its trunk, tossed on to the ground, and trampled him under its feet before he could run for cover.
The news of his death sparked tension in the village. Local police and forest department officials reached the spot and are looking into the matter.
