Berhampur: In a heartrending incident, police Friday arrested a man on charges of snatching gold chains from two women in the city.
However, the shocking revelation by him left the cops, lawyers and judges teary-eyed while he was produced him before a court. Ajit Patnaik (33) confessed that he had turned into a chain snatcher only to meet the study expenditure of his daughter.
“I’m not a professional looter. But, the growing expenses of my daughter’s study forced me to turn into a snatcher. My daily labour wage hardly meets the expenses of my family. So, I resorted to snatching,” he said as tears rolled down his eyes.
His confession left everyone in the court teary-eyed. However, the judge said that the court had to do its duty and sent the man on remand.
According to sources, a woman identified as B Saraswati was moped and looted of her gold chain November 9 while she was home from duty November 9. Acting on the woman’s complaint, police Friday arrested Ajit of Big Bazaar Prahalad Nagar 4th lane here in Ganjam district.
During interrogation, Ajit too conceded that he had snatched away a gold chain from an elderly woman at Chandramani Peta November 8. He said that he was not a professional looter but committed the crimes only to meet his daughter’s expenditure.
The Town police unearthed two gold chains and a moped vehicle from him. He was remanded in judicial custody after the court rejected his bail plea.
In another incident, a miscreant had snatched away a mobile phone from a woman–Anita Patnaik while she walking on the City Hospital Road. Acting on the woman’s complaint, police arrested A Sekhar (21), a resident of the Madugula police station area in Andhra Pradesh.
