Balasore/Jaleswar: Police arrested Friday a man with brown sugar worth Rs 27 lakh in Jaleswar, officials said Saturday.
Acting on tip-off police conducted raids on the Jaleswar Laxmannath road and intercepted the bike on which the accused was travelling. Sources said that the accused identified as Kalia is from Patharpura village under Jaleswar police limits.
Police said that the accused is a history sheeter and already has five cases pending against him. Police found 275 grams of brown sugar in the accused’s possession and also recovered from him `1,23,600 in cash.
Officials stated that police also conducted searches at the residence of the accused and seized other incriminating material. They added that the probe is on to find out the others involved in dealing narcotics with Kalia.
In the war against drugs, Balasore police have successfully apprehended 22 accused persons in the last couple of months in nine different cases in Jaleswar and Sahadevkhunta police station areas. Five of the cases are related to seizure of heroin in large quantities. In all, a total of 1.12kg of brown sugar has been seized, the market value of which is `11.50 crore. Police also said that kingpins associated with drug selling have also been nabbed.
Notably, an anti-narcotics task force was constituted under the leadership of Sagarika Nath, SP Balasore with 3 DSP rank officers namely Sasanka Shekhar Beura, Gayatri Pradhan and Dilip Sahoo to bust the drug racket in Balasore district in mid-January.
