Bhubaneswar, June 8:National Bank for Agriculture and Rural development (NABARD) inaugurated ‘State Level Mango Festival Cum Exhibition 2018’ on its office premises Friday. The exhibition, in its second edition this year, ends June 14.

Governor Ganeshi Lal inaugurated the festival and said such efforts of Nabard will strengthen
tribals and will empower them to sell their produce directly to consumers. He also unveiled a pamphlet on Joint Liability Groups. KC Panigrahi, CGM, NABARD, told reporters on the occasion that the bank was “implementing 56 WADI projects in 19 tribal dominated districts of the state over 39,858 acres of tribal land covering more than 46,817 tribal families”.

Panigrahi said the bank hoped to see a footfall of 2,000 a dayt as buyers will get mangoes at the best price. About 14 varieties of mangoes are on display at the exhibition and the farmers have stocked 20 tonnes of mango this time. The exhibition features 25 stalls in which products other than mangoes are also being displayed. The exhibition will remain open from 11 am to 8 pm each day.

“Mango production has gone up over the years and the state is now producing 8.3 lakh tonnes of mango from around 2 lakh hectares under cultivation,” an official of the bank had said recently. Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy had also said at an event recently that another 56,000 hectares will be brought under mango cultivation over the next five years.
