Imphal: In a fresh incident of violence in Manipur, militants killed nine villagers and 25 others got injured after suspected assailants indiscriminately opened fire at Khamelock village in Imphal East district, police said Wednesday.

Unofficial sources put the death toll at 11.

A police official said that heavily armed Manipur militants killed nine villagers on the spot following their attack on Khamelock village late Tuesday night with automatic weapons. The 25 injured were immediately taken to several hospitals.

The death toll is likely to increase as the condition of several of the wounded is stated to be critical.
