Phulbani: Acting on a tip-off, a team of Special Operations Group (SOG) jawans busted a Maoist camp during a combing operation at Balandapara area under Gochhapada police limits in Kandhamal district, Wednesday.
An exchange of fire took place between Maoists and SOG jawans at the forest when the security forces were carrying out the operation. Outgunned, the Maoists deserted the camp after a while and fled into deeper forests.
According to a source, the raiding team seized several articles including uniforms and propaganda leaflets used by the red rebels from the spot. Combing operations have been intensified in the area.
It may be mentioned here that an exchange of fire took place between the security forces and Maoists in Malkangiri district late Tuesday night where a District Voluntary Force (DVF) jawan was killed while another sustained injuries. A top Maoist leader was also shot down in the encounter.
