Keonjhar: Tension flared up at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here Sunday when a pregnant woman died during operation at the child and women ward due to alleged medical negligence.
The deceased was identified as Jharana Jena of Gumura village. The family of the deceased has filed a complaint at the police station alleging that medical negligence took the life of Jharana.
As tension continued, police were deployed at the DHH.
Atal Bihari Jena, husband of Jharna, said, “Condition of my wife was good in the morning. But the doctor on duty told us that an operation needs to be conducted. Jharna was taken to the OT and saline drips were administered to her. The doctor returned a few minutes later and reported that the condition of my wife was not good and asked us what should be done.”
Atal said he had told the doctor that whatever was needed at this stage to save the patient should be done, but the doctor was absolutely silent.
“By that time my wife had died. But I was not informed. Some policemen and media persons came to know about the incident. Medical negligence claimed my wife’s life,” Atal alleged.
As the news of the death spread, a huge crowd gathered at the hospital. The locals staged protests and demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the bereaved family and action against the errant doctor. Police were immediately deployed on the hospital premises to ward off any untoward incident. The IIC visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
