Medical ‘negligence’ claims infant at Keonjhar DHH

Champua: Tension ran high at the Keonjhar district headquarters hospital after a 7-month-old baby boy breathed his last there due to alleged medical negligence Tuesday.

Family members claimed the infant, who was in a critical condition, was left unattended by the doctors in the hospital. This sparked outrage as the kin of the deceased staged a demonstration on the hospital premises, demanding action against the doctors responsible.

According to sources, Umar, son of Sheikh Nayeem Naik, a resident of the town was suffering from fever. Family members first admitted him to Champua community health centre (CHC).

They then shifted the boy to the DHH after his condition worsened Monday night. However, instead of admitting the baby to the hospital and providing immediate treatment, the doctors kept the infant for observation in the OPD, family members alleged.

Even as the health of the baby severely deteriorated at around 5 am, no doctor allegedly turned up to check on him. He died soon after. Irate family members alleged that the baby boy died due to medical negligence and created a ruckus in the DHH.

Sensing possible law and order situation, a police team reached the DHH and sent away the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, the medical authorities refuted the allegations leveled by the family. A case of unnatural death was registered in this connection and a probe was on, police said.
