Minor girl forced by family for marriage attempts suicide

Cuttack: A minor girl attempted suicide Sunday after she was forced by the family for marriage. When she resisted, family members locked the girl in a room and assaulted her, leading her to attempt suicide by hanging, police said.

The incident occurred in Nischintakoili area of Cuttack district. According to locals, the family had selected a boy for her marriage, but she rejected the proposal by saying she wanted to continue with her studies. “Her family members then assaulted her mercilessly, kept her locked in a room and inflicted mental and physical torture on her. The girl tried to hang herself,” locals said.
