Minor patient dies, family alleges medical negligence

Bhadrak: Tension gripped the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here Tuesday following the death of a minor girl.

According to reports, Debasmita Mallick (13) from Chudakuti Dahipur village under Dhamnagar police limits had complained of vomiting and dizziness. She was admitted to the hospital at 9 pm Monday.

On instructions from the doctor on duty, saline drips and medicines were given to Debasmita. However, after the saline exhausted, her condition worsened at midnight. As the girl did not show any reaction and lay motionless, her kin informed some staff nurses and employees about her condition. But, the latter allegedly did not give due importance to their complaint.

Later, the patient frothed along with blood. The kin sought immediate help of Dr Dipankar Mukherjee who was on outdoor duty. He refused to go indoor ward, it was alleged. With no way out, the kin brought Debasmita to outdoor ward where Mukherjee declared her dead.

Her family members alleged that Debasmita died because of medical negligence. Alleging wrong diagnosis for the girl’s death, the family members had a heated altercation with doctors and employees of the hospital.

Locals, members of Netaji Subash Bahini and the family members laid the body at the outdoor ward and staged a protest, demanding stringent action against the doctors and nurses responsible for neglecting treatment of the girl.

The CDMO, the IIC, the tehsildar and the block chairperson held talks with the agitating people. The family members relented after the officials assured them of a probe into the issue and prompt action against the erring doctors and staff.

A case was also registered at Town police station in this regard.
