Minor put in prison for 3 months

Ranpur: In violation of human rights, a minor boy had to spend more than three months in Ranpur sub-jail of Nayagarh district due to indifferent attitude of the police, reports said.

The matter came to the fore after relatives brought the matter to the notice of the higher authorities. Later, the minor, accused of killing his wife, was sent to a juvenile shelter home in Angul.

According to sources, the boy, 17, of Bankapur village and a girl, 15, of Kunjaban village under Brajarajnagar panchayat fell in love when they were studying at Ranpur College.

The two shared their wish with their family members. When denied, they eloped and got married in a temple. After marriage, they used to stay at a rented house in Bhubaneswar.

Later, the groom’s family brought the newlyweds back to their house at Bankapur. After a few days of normal living, her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law allegedly started putting pressure on her to bring dowry from her father.

On one day, they asked her to go to her father and get some money to which she did not oblige. At her refusal the trio lost their cool, thrashed her and later strangulated her to death in the night of September 12.

Acting on the girl’s father’s complaint accusing the trio of killing his daughter, the police arrested the minor husband and his mother on the same day. It was when their bail plea was rejected, they were sent to Ranpur sub-jail.

Over these three months, the police carried an investigation into the case and later their investigation revealed that the accused put behind the bars was not a youth but a minor, calling the inquiry of the investigating officer into the question.
