Minors harassed at brick kiln

Cuttack, April 13: Even as two girls were rescued from the Cuttack railway station by police recently, the issue of harassment of minors by brick kiln owners in the district has become a cause of concern for the district administration.
According to sources, the questioning of the two minor girls, who were engaged at a brick kiln in Nagabali, as labourers, revealed the kiln operator used to harass them. They were threatened of dire conequences if they exposed them.
According to Pragati Mohanty of the district child welfare committee, the panel has suggested a survey of all brick kilns in the district to ascertain whether minors have been engaged there. ‘‘Besides, we have suggested the collector to come up with concrete measures to ensure that labourers at these kilns are not harassed and the minors are rescued”, she said.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the brick kiln owner at the Cuttack Sadar police station and according to police sources, efforts are on to nab the owner of the brick kiln as soon as possible.
