Misappropriation of MGNREGS funds alleged; villagers seek probe

Rairangpur: Massive irregularities were allegedly committed in several projects funded under MGNREGS in Badajharan panchayat under Bijatala block in Mayurbhanj district.  Villagers have demanded a high-level probe in funds misappropriation during 2015 to 2018.

The villagers pointed out misappropriation running to lakhs of rupees and submitted Thursday a memorandum addressed to the district collector through BDO Jaykrushna Patra.

The villagers also forwarded copies of the memorandum to the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the same department of the state government.

Among the alleged misappropriations pointed out are — Rs 9 lakh for a pond excavation, Rs 6.65 lakh for a check dam at Rijituka canal and Rs 5 lakh for construction of a road at Lambeshada.

However, in spite of such huge amounts spent on these constructions, the projects have not taken off properly and all of them have suffered damages.

The villagers demanded stern action against the guilty people. The BDO said he can only comment about the irregularities only after a proper probe is conducted. He assured the villagers that the collector will look into the matter.
