Kesinga: As many as 20 male and female labourers staying in a camp of a railway contractor in Kalahandi district were injured after they were attacked by some unidentified miscreants late Thursday night.
The labourers work under a railway contractor. Like any other day, they had their dinner and went to sleep at the camp of the contractor near the railway station godown.
At about 10:00pm, 10 miscreants came in an SUV and stopped near the camp. They asked the labourers for a glass to drink liquor. When the labourers refused to give them a glass; the miscreants attacked them with sticks. They even attempted to outrage the modesty of female labourers.
The terrified labourers then called Baikuntha Karua, the nightwatchman employed by the contractor. In a while, Karua and four others reached the spot. But they were also beaten up severely. Karua got his hand broken in the assault.
All the injured labourers were taken to Kesinga community health centre (CHC). Later, they were discharged after treatment.
Before leaving the spot, the miscreants allegedly looted two motorcycles, two mobile phones and Rs 4,000 in cash from the labourers.
On basis of the report lodged by the labourers, Kesinga police have registered a case (No-108/21) and launched an investigation.
When contacted, Kesinga police station IIC AK Mohapatra said an investigation is underway. The miscreants will soon be nabbed, he added.
