Miscreants critically injure betel shop owner for Rs 60 in Puri

Puri:  Is the value of human life less than Rs 60?

That’s the amount over which a betel shop owner was allegedly attacked by some miscreants in Mochi Sahi of Puri district late Wednesday night.

The victim has been identified as Balaram Mohapatra. He has a betel shop in Mochi Sahi area of the town.

According to a source, a man of that area had been eating paan (betel) from Mohapatra’s shop for quite some time. But he was not paying for Mohapatra’s service and owed the latter Rs 60.

When the man came to the betel shop again, Mohapatra demanded the Rs 60 that was owed to him following which the two had an altercation.

Following the incident, some youths reportedly chased and attacked Mohapatra when he shut his shop and was on the way to his home Wednesday night.

However, some passer-by saved Mohapatra and took him to the Puri district headquarters hospital and later shifted to Cuttack SCB for further treatment.

Police were however unavailable for any comment in connection with the incident.
